| History of MLD
During the early 1930's, Dr Emil Vodder created a unique range of movements which brought relief from chronic conditions such as sinus congestion and catarrh. Since Vodder's pioneering work, MLD has spread world wide and has become a popular treatment in many European hospitals and clinics.
In the UK, it is becoming one of the primary treatments for Lymphoedema.
Lymphoedema is a swelling that can affect any part of the body, although it is most commonly seen in an arm or leg. this condition develops when the lymph system, the delicate vessels of the draining nodes, can no longer work effectively.
Fluid, protein and toxins build up in the tissues. The skin becomes dry and thickened and the affected part feels tight and firm.
Primary Lymphoedema is either congenital or spontaneous, a result of an inherited abnormality of the lymphatic and venous system.
Secondary Lymphoedema is caused by damage to the lymphatic system and can develop as a result of:
- Mastectomy
- Hysterectomy
- Radiotherapy
- Chemotherapy
- Injury or Accident
- Infection
- Immobility
